DOMSAC International Lecture Series

The great scientist Galileo Galilei remarked "the book of nature is written in the language of Mathematics". The present involvement of Mathematics in day to day life has conclusively proved the relevance of the above statement. Nothing has been evolved from a reverie, but from the dedication of philanthropists. As a mark of respect towards  such  great Mathematicians, the Department of Mathematics, St Aloysius College, Edathua in association with IQAC is  organizing  a year-long International Lecture series in memory of those eminent teachers and preachers of Mathematics.

Lecture 1

Evariste Galois

This year is the 209th birth anniversary year of the famous mathematician Evariste Galois who solved the mystery of  "Solvability by Radicals" at the age of 15, which had baffled the world of Mathematics for more than 350 years. The first lecture in this series is in Memory of Galois and will be delivered by Dr. Pravas K, Assistant Professor , Kodungallur Kunjikkuttan Thampuran Memorial Government College, Pulloot, Trichur at 3 pm on 28th October 2020 . He speaks about "Visualising Some Mathematics Concepts Using Softwares"

Lecture 2

Abraham de Moivre was a French mathematician known for De Moivre's formula, a formula that links complex numbers and trigonometry, and for his work on the normal distribution and probability theory. This year is his  266th Death Anniversary year.

Lecture 3

Srinivasa Ramanujan  was an Indian mathematician who during his short life,  independently compiled nearly 3,900 results.   Many were completely novel; his original and highly unconventional results, such as the Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta function, partition formulae and mock theta functions, have opened entire new areas of work and inspired a vast amount of further research. He became one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society and only the second Indian member, and the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Of his original letters, Hardy stated that a single look was enough to show they could have been written only by a mathematician of the highest calibre, comparing Ramanujan to mathematical geniuses such as Leonhard Euler and Jacob Jacobi.

This year is the 378th death anniversary of Galileo Galilei. Galileo Galilei is an Italian natural philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who made fundamental contributions to the sciences of motion, astronomy, and strength of materials and to the development of the scientific method. His formulation of the law of falling bodies, and parabolic trajectories marked the beginning of a fundamental change in the study of motion.
